Weser-Renaissance Museum / Brake Castle

Abb. Tower and bridge from Castle Brake

The Brake Castle is the most important architectural monument in the city between the 12th and 19th centuries it took hundreds of years to complete. The museum is located in the part of the castle built by Graf Simon of Lippe between the years of 1584-92.

The current exhibition is complemented with a special exhibit that changes once a year and should help to ex-plain various aspects of art and culture in northern and western Germany in the time between the reformation and the thirty years war with the use of more than 600 artifacts. Spread out over 2000sqm, the museum pro-vides an amazing perspective of Renaissance culture specifically of the Weser tradition.

Extensive social and cultural change as well as economic development took place during this time period. The Reformation and the violent results as well as the expansion of the humanist movement created a long lasting effect on both the living conditions as well as the quality of life of the citizens. It is for these reasons that the wealthy nobles and townspeople of Lemgo created or sponsored so many works of art.

Particular sights of interest close to the Burg Brake are the castle chapel and the seven-storied tower with a splendid view of Lemgo.
