Hexenbürgermeisterhaus Municipal Museum

Abb. Hexenbürgermeisterhaus

The Municipal Museum Hexenbürgermeisterhaus is among the oldest city museums in Ostwestfallen Lippe. With its façade dating back to 1571, it is the most outstanding example of Weserrenaissance architecture in the area. Despite numerous reconstruction projects, the interior of the house (the hallway with fireplace, the hall, cellar, and pantry) remain intact.

The house takes its name from the infamous mayor and lawyer Hermann Cothmann notorious during his time in office for merciless witch hunting. The museum shows a number of torture instruments from the collection of the executioner family Clauss.
