In the heart of Lippe County, between the hills of the Teuttoburg Forest and the Weser Highlands, you will find one of the most architecturally beautiful towns in Germany: the 800-year-old renaissance town Lemgo. It is surruonded by a variety of wood and upland landscapes with numerous day-trip destinations. The fascinating history and the present-day life melt together to form a unique urban culture.

Lemgo invites you to take a special stroll through its streets. Founded in 1190 by Bernard II of Lippe on the crossroads of two trading routes, the Old Hansa Town flourished in both architecture and trade.

Very few towns in Germany have a historical centre restored with such careful attention to detail. There are monument buildings of European significance, e.g. "Rathaus"(Town Hall). Built between the years 1325 and 1612 the house represents a shining example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Other masterly restored buildings adorn the market square.

The Lemgo St.Nicolai’s and St.Mary churches make a significant imprit on the historical townscape. The dissimilar towers of St.Nicolai’s church rise over the Town Hall, distinguishing form far-off the magnificent architecture of the town.

The municipal museum "Hexenbürgermeisterhaus", a jewel of the Weser-Renaissance period, is one of the most popular monuments in the town. It was named after the mayor and lawyer Hermann Cothmann notorious for mercilous witch-hunting.

The municipal museum "Junkerhaus", the creation of the Lemgo artist Karl Junker (1850-1912), is internationally recognised as a work of "outsider art". This building is both a dwelling and a complete work of art. There you can reach the historical town centre passing the rampart park with wonderful alleys and green paths along the small ponds.

You will experience pure sport fever in the modern sport arena "Lipperlandhalle". There one can meet the champion Federal Handball Leage team TBV Lemgo, successful winners of many national and international titles.

For music lovers Lemgo offers first-rate entertainment. International stars regularly perform in the "Lipperlandhalle". Classical music amatuers enjoy high-class concerts in St.Nicolai’s and St.Mary’s churches.

The full spectrum of Lemgo "Joy of Life" spreads a year round with numerous town festivals. The Lemgo "Summer Season" in the market square combines the enjoyment of open-air concerts and theatre with the enchanting ambience of the historical town centre. Additionalyl fascinating festivals are the "Strohsemmelfest", the traditional "KläschenMarkt" magically transform the town centre. Lemgo unique culinary specialities are famous well beyond the town boders. For example,"Lebkuchen" (gingerbread) from the "House of Pahne" has been baked for generations in Lemgo and delivered all over the world.

Only in Lemgo you can be treated with the original "Strohsemmel" baked on straw specially in one of the many cafes located within the town.
