On the occasion of the 350th birthday of Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), IUDICIUM Verlag will start a new publication series, a Critical Edition of works by this eminent physician and researcher. Kaempfer's works provide a vast amount of information about the Middle and Far East, particularly about Japan. Heutiges Japan ("Japan Today"), a work that remained unpublished in Kaempfer's lifetime but was translated into English and published in London some years after his death, is now available with an introduction and a detailed commentary. This work - the London edition of 1727 was entitled The History of, Japan - was the main source of knowledge about Japan for the European Enlightenment. The critical edition published by IUDICIUM Verlag is a reliable source for all those interested in Engelbert Kaempfer's life and works, in the history of relations between Europe and Japan, and in questions of perceiving and describing non-European civilizations.

Briefe von und an Engelbert Kaempfer ("Letters written by and to Engelbert Kaempfer") is a critical edition of letters written between 1683 and 1715. lt provides intriguing insights into the life and work of one of the most outstanding scholars and explorers of the late 17th century.

The critical edition of Zeichnungen japanischer Pflanzen ("Illustrations of Japanese Plants") features detailed annotations with reference to all botanical works by Kaempfer. It shows the wide range and high quality of Kaempfer's research in the fields of botany and language.
